Aronia – Superfruit

What is superood?

Superfood is a term that is all the rage now in magazines and social media. In the era of artificially processed food, poor in nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, fatty acids, etc., which only provide empty calories, superfood is an extremely interesting and healthy alternative.

Superfood is rich in numerous minerals and vitamins, and usually pretty easily available. Some propose that this group of food should be classified somewhere between ordinary food and herbs.

Regular consumption of superfood helps prevent or fight against many diseases in a natural way. This is a pleasant way to support your body in fighting diabetes, asthma, cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, heart diseases, cancer and many others – all just by eating!

Superfood includes, among others, goji berries, acai berries, spirulina, matcha green tea, chia seed (Spanish sage), etc. In Poland, superfood also includes: chokeberry, kale, sauerkraut, nettle, flax and linseed oil, groats, fennel flower, and common dandelion.

Chokeberry – the superfood

A special group of superfood has been established to list the very valuable fruits – superfruit. It is in this particular group that our chokeberry is classified. Its miraculous properties have been proven by numerous studies, both on animals and in clinical tests on humans.

Just as a reminder – chokeberry is a rich source of vitamins: B, E, C, PP, A, and P, as well as dietary fibre, pectin, flavonoids, tannins (which give chokeberry its specific taste). It also contains anthocyanins. It can be used in the treatment or prevention of diseases such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension, hemorrhoids, cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, rheumatic problems, eye problems, urinary tract infections, allergies, liver diseases, etc. The list is really long and impressive. You will find more information about chokeberry in the book by professor Iwona Wawer “Aronia superowoc” (Chokeberry the Superfruit).

Include chokeberry in your diet

Because of its fairly characteristic tangy taste, it is recommended to include chokeberry in your diet in a processed form. The perfect solution are all kinds of chokeberry juice, jam, jelly, smoothies, cookies or sauces to be served with meat. Chokeberry is best harvested after first ground frost, i.e. in September, which helps eliminate its characteristic slightly bitter taste.
